2016 Autism Speaks Washington, DC Walk

Just a quick note to let you all know if you don't already that the 2016 Autism Speaks Walk is taking place in Washington D.C. on October 1st, 2016!  This event promises to be a very exciting and important opportunity to not only raise awareness about autism, but to raise money for research and a cure. Attending an event such as this is an excellent way to connect with other people with autism spectrum disorders and their families.  It is great for those who may not be familiar with autism and are looking to learn more about the realities faced by individuals with ASD as well as serving to de-stigmatize ASD and see how having the diagnosis really does not mean that a person is defective or broken, but a person like everyone else.  This sentiment is often lost on people who do not have first hand exposure or experience; such events help create the awareness necessary to make efforts at advocacy and change a reality.  I appreciate events such as the Walk for these reasons, mostly because it provides a safe and loving environment for individuals who often struggle with socializing and having enough appropriate opportunities, an excellent way to do so.  More information can be found on the Autism Speaks Washington DC Chapter website.
